Until next week Wednesday, agricultural researchers have an opportunity to apply for funding for work in greenhouse gas mitigation.

The Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program (AGGP), which will run until 2021, is a $27 million program through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), aiming to develop on-farm greenhouse gas mitigation technology and practices. AAFC representative Michal Jacob-Fletcher says the objective of the program is to enhance the understanding and assistability of agricultural technologies and beneficial management practices and processes that can be adopted by farmers to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.

"Agriculture does have a major impact on greenhouse gas emissions, and so there's a real opportunity to reduce the emission in that area and make a (further) contribution," she says.

Jacob-Fletcher says this program is contributes to Canada's commitment to the Global Research Alliance on greenhouse gases.

Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and other levels of government.

"In order to be considered eligble, you have to align with one of the priority areas," Jacob-Fletcher adds, "the first is livestock systems, the second is cropping systems, the third is agricultural water use efficiency, and the fourth being agri-forestry."

Selected projects could receive up to two million dollars in financial support. The application package is available on the AAFC website.
