It appears a free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union could be signed within days.

The Belgian government has reached a deal with the holdout region of Wallonia.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) President Ron Bonnett was happy to hear the news.

"I think it's good news if CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) can go ahead," he said. "I think everybody was on sort of pins and needles the last while hoping the approval goes ahead. At the end of the day CETA's spelled out a set of rules which the agriculture sector was happy with, that we can move ahead to access some of the markets in Europe"

Bonnett said it was frustrating that one small region could hold up the entire deal.

He adds if the deal goes through without many changes, the biggest winners would be Canada's pork and beef sectors, which would have increased access to Europe. He notes one of the challenges will be to see how the Canadian dairy sector responds to the extra cheese that would be coming into the country.

The CETA agreement will need to be approved again by the other 27 EU states.
