Manitoba Pork is reminding everyone about the importance of biosecurity, especially at this time of year.

Mark Fynn is the quality assurance and animal care programs manager for the organization.

"At this time of year a lot of different viruses including stuff like porcine epidemic diarrhea virus transmits around a lot easier and survives a lot better in these sort of cold conditions," he said. "Especially when it's slushy out, it provides a perfect vehicle for the viruses to get transported around."

Fynn says it's important for transport drivers to properly wash, disinfect, and dry at each swine site.

He notes that although there remains only five on-farm cases of PEDv in Manitoba, there is pressure coming from south of the border where the number of cases continues to rise.
