Jolene Gonzales moved to Steinbach with her family at the age of 10.  Through mutual friends in their church, she was introduced to her future husband Andy who lived in Ohio.  After several years of long distance dating, the couple were engaged and married.  Jolene made the move to Ohio to begin her new life with Andy.

In 2007, the couple returned to south east Manitoba to attend the wedding of Jolene's brother.  It was during this visit that specialists believe Andy was bitten by an infected tick that was carrying not only Lyme Disease, but a virtual cocktail of co-infections.

What makes this situation more troubling is the fact that Andy went undiagnosed for several years, with doctors initially blaming his severe symptoms on stress and anxiety. In another twist, Andy unknowingly passed the virus along to his wife Jolene.

Aside from the serious health issues that living with Lyme Disease presents, their illness has also left them with significant financial difficulties, as there is currently no insurance coverage for medication or treatment, and the disease has left Andy unable to work.  Jolene works as much as her health will allow her to.

Family and friends have organized a fundraiser for this Saturday, September 17th at the Pansy Hall.  Doors open at 5pm, dinner will be served at 6pm, followed by a dance and social evening.  All proceeds will be used to offset medical costs for the couple.  Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 6 - 10 years of age.  They can be purchased in advance by calling 204-326-3669.  Limited tickets will be available at the door.
