A spokesperson for Manitoba Infrastructure says it is still too early to give a timeline for when highways in the Whiteshell will be repaired following weekend storms.

More than five inches of rain hit areas including Falcon Lake and Caddy Lake Saturday morning, washing out roads, eroding shoulders and resulting in culverts letting go.

"It's just a matter of too much water at one time," says Larry Halayko, Executive Director of Construction and Maintenance.

As of Monday morning, Provincial Trunk Highway 44 remains closed from Rennie to Caddy Creek, Provincial Road 312 is closed from the 44 to the Ontario border and Provincial Road 307 is closed for about eight kilometres north of the 44.

Halayko says though several kilometres worth of highway is in disrepair, it is too early to give a damage estimate.

"It's a little bit premature until we have the water recede and get a better look to have a better idea what's involved," he says. "We'll know that probably later in the week or so."

He adds water levels on roadways are dropping but he says that can quickly change if beaver dams give way.

Halayko says he doesn't think damage over the weekend will result in major long-term impacts for motorists this summer.
