The City of Steinbach is having the same problem in the Clearspring Greens development as it did in the Deerfield neighbourhood regarding problems with sewer gases creating strong odours. Those two areas are the only ones in the city that have septic tanks and low-pressure sewers. Mayor Chris Goertzen says the sewer gas problem occurs in the area where the low-pressure sewer is connected to the city's gravity sewer system.

"There are some effects from the combination of the two types of sewer. We will be looking at eliminating those effects in 2017 through a process that we've come to know works very well in the Deerfield area."

The city fixed this situation in the Deerfield area in 2010 by setting up a small building near the point at which the two sewer systems are linked where a chemical is fed into the sewer system to neutralize the bacteria that causes the problem. A similar building will be constructed just north of the outdoor pool at the Steinbach Aquatic Centre. Goertzen says the building will cost in the range of $50,000-$75,000.

Goertzen notes this sewer gas problem can also be reduced by people having their septic tanks pumped out every year. City statistics show that only about 60% of residents in the Clearspring Greens and Deerfield areas comply with this suggestion.
