Eleven students of the Kinderprep class at Steinbach Family Resource Centre graduated Friday morning.

Student Occupational Therapist Laura Stebeleski says it's a five to six-week program which focuses on fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social skills, sensory awareness and literacy.

"These are kind of the basic foundation building blocks that they need to learn throughout school and as they progress throughout the different grades in school. So, to kind of give them that head start, and how they're going to feel when they get into kindergarten."

Student Occupational Therapist Sherrilyn McLaughlin adds, parents are included in the educating process.

"There's an emphasis on educating the parents a lot too. So, we help show them ways that they can keep working on these skills at home because these skills are learned throughout life, you can't teach them in ten sessions."

McLaughlin says a great benefit of the program is it gets children used to being around other children, which in turn increases their social skills, one of the five program objectives.
