Construction crews will be moving into the Meadows neighbourhood in southwest Steinbach Monday. Phil Kalyta, the city's head engineer, says the contractor will start out with sidewalk work along the east side of Giesbrecht Street and along the west side of Lilac Bay.

"The two sidewalk projects we have in the Meadows, on Lilac and Giesbrecht, are going to start May 17th. The Meadows street asphalt overlays will happen after May long weekend and that should take about a month to complete."

Kalyta adds the contractor for the Highway #12 intersection at Acres Drive and Penfeld Drive will also begin next week Tuesday. He says traffic disruptions should be minimal at first.

"He's going to start on some of the off-site works. He's got some preparation to do on Acres for some of the off-site traffic and, once all that work is done, then we're going to get on to closing the Highway #12 median. It'll be intermittent lane closures while they're working for the first part and then probably, once we get into the middle of June, then it's going to be down to just one lane through. It's not going to affect the Highway #12 traffic too much but it will affect getting on and off Acres and Penfeld. That's where there'll be some problems that some of the local businesses and residents will have to take alternate routes."

Meanwhile, Kalyta says they are meeting with the contractor for the Old Tom Road project this week. He expects it will begin in June and take about five to six weeks to complete which means it should be ready in time for the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games.
