More parking is coming to Fernwood Place in Steinbach. David Driedger, Chief Executive Officer for Steinbach Housing says they are adding 16 parking spots which are going up off Lumber Avenue.

Driedger says Fernwood Place currently has 75 parking spots, yet there are 136 suites. He notes right now they are at a maximum of available spots for tenants. Driedger says there have been times when they have been tight on being able to offer parking spots to new tenants, and those individuals have chosen not to move in. Further to that, he says seniors are driving later in life.

"So that's a quality of life issue," says Driedger. "We believe this is pertinent in us establishing a parking lot that allows for more tenants who retain their vehicle and opportunity to come and go as they please."

According to Driedger, adding 16 spots is substantial. He notes it is always good to have more parking and this gives some breathing room. Driedger says the problem with the footprint of their yard is that adding any more parking spots in the future will likely not happen.

The project will cost about $170,000. It should be completed by late September. Driedger says the land used for the parking spots had just been green space. A row of trees was removed to accommodate construction but Driedger says they will add some shrubbery.

Meanwhile, the new patio added off the building's multi purpose room is now complete.
