The debate over using food crops for fuel production versus human consumption may not be necessary. That from Dr. Curtis Remple, a researcher at the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Neutraceuticals in Winnipeg. He feels the byproducts of biofuel production could enter the human food chain in some manner in the future. Preliminary research shows the byproducts may contain properties which would allow them to be marketed into the health food sector, for example, for the management of cardiovascular disease. Remple believes the most likely avenue for biofuel byproducts is in pill or capsule form, probably marketed as a neutraceutical. He thinks these developments will allow for even further value added opportunities to be developed closer to the farmgate.
