The Reeve of Hanover says they are bracing for the worst when it comes to road conditions expected next spring in the municipality. Stan Toews made the comment in response to the wet fall in southeastern Manitoba and how this might impact gravel roads during the spring thaw.

In 2016, Hanover spent nearly $700,000 on its gravel budget. That is $300,000 more than what had been budgeted. Toews notes the increase was due in large part to the frost boils and wet conditions last spring.

For 2017, the Transportation Committee has proposed increasing their budget to $650,000 in order to lay more gravel on their roads.

"Because we have some good roads and some problem roads," notes Toews. "The feeling is that we have to spend this kind of dollars to make them all decent."

When compared to what other municipalities in the southeast are spending on gravel, Toews says Hanover is on the low end. This proposed change would see Hanover fall more in line with other municipalities.
