The high temperatures and humidex values have had an impact on the homeless in Steinbach.

Shannon Kehler, Shelter Coordinator with Today House, says there are options for those needing to find a place to keep cool.

"So very often it's a mall or a Tim Horton's, sometimes a restaurant or a church," explains Kehler. "Any place that can get them out of the heat and cool them off for a few minutes. I think just being out in that heat, it's dangerous. Just like the rest of us with sun burns, heat stroke, dehydration and if you haven't been eating. To be out in the sun after that day can be quite a serious situation."

Kehler says there are more homeless people in Steinbach than one may realize because they're not the stereotypical pushing a shopping cart down Main Street kind of community.

She adds during the summer, evenings are not as much of a concern.

"Like many of us, they like independence so they're finding places. The weather often cools off in the evening so it's not as much of a concern and if they need shelter then they can call us at Today House," notes Kehler. "Even with the heat it's typical for us to be a little bit slower in the summer. But starting in September through May our numbers go up significantly."

She adds to help the homeless in Steinbach organizations like Today House run on donations and are always looking for support.
