Tourism is the focus project for La Broquerie's Community Development Corporation (CDC) - Société de Développement Communautaire (SDC).

Projects Officer Richard Turenne explains, "for 2016 and probably for a few years [we're planning] a multi-faceted project that involves trails for active transportation. There is provisions for trail heads that would highlight key features of the community like our events, amenities, businesses and maps of the town or municipality."

Turenne notes the municipality has already given the green light to proceed with this phase adding there will also be visitor maps and activity booklets to entice school groups to explore and discover the culture, history and ecology in La Broquerie. He says he would also like to see permanent historical and interpretive signage for visitors as they explore. These signs would include people, places and events that have taken place.

He says CDC currently has a steering committee who are talking about how the interpretive signs, maps and kiosks will communicate information and what kind of information will be presented.

Turenne explains CDC is an extension of the municipality and their purpose is to support volunteer groups through training, promotion of their events and networking meetings. He adds the CDC they are also a part of the business community and have recently printed a business guide and saw the completion of three 'Welcome To La Broquerie' signs.

He notes the CDC has also developed a rough five-year long-term plan, something they have never done before and hopes this will help in further creating a business network.

"It's very exciting and we've never been there before. There's a lot of gaps in some services in La Broquerie; should it be the CDC to oversee it, we're not sure," says Turenne. "What makes La Broquerie tick for tourism? We want to discover that. So in the next year and in the subsequent years we want to really discover why we want people to come here and not just come here but spend some dollars here, support the businesses, and in the long-term, have them live here."

Turenne says to attract people to an area you need community support, infrastructure, events and programming on the community level. He adds La Broquerie is already a very good place to live, but they want to discover how to make it even better.
