The cost of rebuilding McKenzie Avenue south of Mitchell cost Hanover a whole lot more money than expected.

Back in May, Council for the Rural Municipality of Hanover approved upgrades to one mile of Road 35N (McKenzie Avenue), from Road 31E to Road 32E, south of

(Work on McKenzie Avenue is now complete)Mitchell. Reeve Stan Toews says the plan was for a complete rebuild, including opening up the road and putting down filter cloth and granular material.

According to the municipality, that road has had some serious issues in recent years with very soft conditions. In fact, there have been occasions where that portion of roadway has been closed for safety reasons.

But then shortly after crews began work this summer, they realized very poor sub soil conditions underneath. In fact, Works and Operations Manager Wes Fehr stated that road was built overtop a bog back in the day. As a result, that soil needed to be removed from the roadbed.

Realizing this additional work would cause an overage, but wishing to reconstruct the road properly, the scope of the project changed. And, now that the work is complete and the road has reopened, Council has learned the final price tag for that project.

"We went about one hundred forty-six thousand dollars over budget," says Toews.

Hanover originally budgeted $325,000 for the work. Fast Brothers Incorporated was the lowest bid at $334,000. The final cost is approximately $471,000. Toews notes the added costs will be paid for through federal gas tax money. And he says there is a very good chance other roads in that area have similar sub soil.

Toews says on the bright side, work along Road 30E or Broesky Road, west of Mitchell came in slightly below budget.
