The Rural Municipality of Hanover is looking to bring automated garbage totes into more communities in 2016.

Reeve Stan Toews says they introduced this pilot project in Mitchell last year. The totes were delivered in fall and by early December were being used there by residents. The 96 gallon container is rolled to the curb on garbage day and then when the garbage truck comes along, it can pick up the container and dump its contents into the truck without anyone having to get off the vehicle.

"To date we have had very few complaints," says Toews. "It seems to be working well."

Toews says the plan is to deliver totes to residences in Blumenort and New Bothwell in May and then to Kleefeld and Grunthal in August. He says the municipality will send out pamphlets to residents in advance and will also be holding information meetings in order to train people how to use them.

Meanwhile, compost depots were held on Saturdays last October in the communities of Mitchell and Kleefeld. The program was considered a huge success and Toews says the plan for 2016 is to host depots in those two communities all summer. There is also talk of possibly expanding the program to other communities.
