The New Bothwell Recreation Centre is now back up and running.

Hanover Reeve Stan Toews says the Fire Commissioner shut down the building in winter after some renovations there did not pass final inspection. Work needing to be done included major electrical upgrades, mechanical upgrades, a new roof, air exchange system, building insulation and reconfiguration of interior spaces.

Hanover council then held a public hearing, hoping to approve a borrowing bylaw that would see the municipality borrow up to a maximum of $200,000 in order to finish the work. But objections forced the matter to the municipal board, which has now sided with Hanover council.

Hanover has been given permission to borrow up to $200,000, which will end up costing the average Bothwell homeowner an extra $135 per year over ten years on their taxes.

Toews says the centre had been closed since about February. He notes summer is not as busy as winter, yet it still gets a lot of use on weekends.

Some residents questioned why a brand new building isn't constructed, but Toews says just to put up a bare shell of the same size would cost $600,000.
