A new commercial development is in the works along Highway #12 north in Steinbach. It would be built along the west side of Highway #12, just north of the RCMP detachment office. City council gave First Reading Tuesday to a bylaw to rezone the property from agricultural to commercial. Mayor Chris Goertzen says, while no details are available on what is planned there, the fact the land is being rezoned means something is imminent.

"When you have a request for zoning (changes), it also will change the tax implications and so that does mean there is some planning in process. We look forward to seeing what the developer has in mind for that piece of property."

The next step in the rezoning process is a Public Hearing at city hall which is scheduled for November 1st.

Councillor Jac Siemens moved First Reading of the bylaw saying it appears to be a good fit for the area.

"Commercial zoning there is part of our Community Plan. I think we need to hear the public on this so we passed First Reading. It's great that there are people still looking to develop commercially in Steinbach."
