The National Land and Water Information Services web portal has been launched by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.  Project leader Susan Till says the site features agri-environmental maps, data, and tools which will help producers make responsible land use decisions.  She says the first phase of the 4 phase project was completed this spring with the drawing together of agri-environmental data from various locations to one common site.  She adds over the next 3 years the remaining work will be completed.
That includes adding technology to manage agri-environmental geospatial information according to national standards, new GIS applications and services, and enriching linkages to data provided by other organizations.  Till notes questions producers will be able to answer with the info provided on the site include the carrying capacity of a particular parcel of land and how much fencing is needed for a specific pasture.  The service is expected to be completed some time in 2009.
