The Steinbach Regional Secondary School's football team will play it's final game of the 2015 season under the lights on Friday.

The SRSS will face the Sturgeon Heights Huskies at Investors Group Field in the Winnipeg High School Football League's Kas Vidruk “AA” Division championship game.

The Sabres have been there before – twice actually.

After going winless in their first two seasons, Steinbach Regional defeated the Neelin Spartans 31-6 in the 2012 Andy Currie “A” Division championship game.

Last year the Sabres lost 30-6 to the St. Paul's Crusaders in the Vidruk Division final.

“It didn't feel good at all,” said SRSS running back Patrick Maendel when asked to reflect on that loss to the Crusaders. “Last year we were slow, we didn't get off the ball and we weren't physical enough. This year we know what we have to do.”

After losing their season opener the Sabres have reeled off eight straight wins.

Win number nine and the CTV Bowl belongs to Steinbach Regional.

The Huskies finished with a 1-6 record in the John Potter “AAA” Division and dropped down to the Vidruk Division for the playoffs.

Sturgeon Heights beat the Dakota Lancers in the quarterfinals and the River East Kodiaks in the semifinals.

The SRSS defensive unit has been outstanding all season long allowing just 86 points in eight games and they'll have to bring it one more time when they face the Huskies.

“I'm expecting their offense to be really explosive,” said Sabres linebacker Dakota Funk. “I think they have a really good chance of getting some big plays on us but we're a disciplined defense. We can hold our own against that “AAA” team and bring our best competition.”

Steinbach Regional's offense, which struggled early in the season, has a three-head monster running game featuring Patrick Maendel, Austin Buhler and Cameron Oliver.

Maendel and Buhler have combined for 20 rushing and receiving touchdowns.

“We started off the season really slow and we're peaking at the right time,” said Sabres offensive lineman Nic Wareham. “We've been scoring more points. Everyone is playing well. We need a big game from the trenches, everyone outside and the skill players. Once we get that done I think we can take them.”

The opening kickoff Friday at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg is 5 p.m.
