In their first real game scenario to impress the coaching staff, the Steinbach Pistons rookies put on a clinic in a 3-1 victory over the Selkirk Steelers rookies on Tuesday night.

For a lot of the first year players, it was the first time they got to skate with the Pistons logo on their chest and they did not disappoint. Steinbach's Cody Merritt got the scoring started midway through the first period and they didn't look back. Caleb Paisley netted the eventual game winner late in the first period, with the assist going to Eric Stout, giving Steinbach a 2-0 cushion after the first. Shots in the period were 16-3 for Steinbach.

Pistons fan Dale Wolgemuthe made the trip to Selkirk to watch the game and summed up the first period. "Pistons took over halfway through the first. Imposing their will!"

The lead would swell to 3-0 thanks to Curtis Ireland with Vaughn Dupre picking up the helper.

Bennett Garber picked up the win making only 7 saves in 7 shot attempts through 40 minutes. Not as easy as it would seem for a goalie who had to battle extended time of little to no work.

Matthew Thiessen took over in the third period and made 4 out of 5 saves.

Both teams finished 0-3 on the power play while the final shots on goal were 46-12 for Steinbach.

It's listed that 160 were in attendance to watch the game and according to local man Riley Sobering, most of those were Pistons fans. "It's amazing, Pistons fans just love and support their team. They'll go anywhere."

Steinbach Pistons main camp, which got started Tuesday, continues all week at the TG Smith Centre. The players are broken up into 3 teams and will go through various workouts and games before the exhibition season begins Sunday vs the Winnipeg Blues.
