A program in St. Pierre is helping people aged 55-64 to return to the workforce. It's called Baby Boomers in Action. Spokesperson Ralph Collette says they started the program in 2012. He explains these people may have retired early, lost their jobs or are looking for a change in career. The program gives them the skills to get a new job.

"Our program specializes in pre-employment, short term training to prepare the workers for full time, part time, seasonal or self-employment. We give six weeks of classroom setting for people 55 years and up who live in southeastern Manitoba. We target what the labour market is looking for. We have a classroom setting of eight to ten people."

He adds they are usually full and there is a waiting list to get in. Collette says it's important for people in this age group to know there is a need for their skills, especially in two fields of work.

"The mental health field and helping senior citizens is quite a demand. We think because of our clients' life experiences, they're very good in that field. This age group really needs to know that there are still a lot of businesses that need their experience."

Collette says the Baby Boomers in Action classes run five days a week for six weeks followed by six weeks of mentoring to assist in job placement. He adds they have had very good success in helping people find work.
