Emergency crews were called to a property on Bernadette Road, one mile north of Niverville around 5:00 Sunday evening. The RM of Ritchot and Town of Niverville Fire Departments worked together to extinguish a roof fire on a 100 year old horse barn.

Niverville Fire Chief Keith Bueckert says the homeowners were having a bonfire earlier in the day and he suspects an ember established itself and caused the fire. Bueckert notes when crews arrived the homeowner had started extinguishing the fire with the garden hose and crews were able to put out the rest adding they removed the straw from the attic, where the fire had spread, and ensured it would not reignite.

He says there was only minor damage to the roof and attic and the one horse in the barn was able to escape. There were no injuries and crews cleared the scene around 7:30.
