The town of Emerson is looking for a few good men and women to train as first responders.  Local firefighters, who have provided the service for the past few years, no longer qualify as first responders because their training does not meet Manitoba Health's new standards for first responders.  In fact, Mayor Wayne Arseny says the fire department no longer receives 911 calls where there is a need to stabilize someone prior to an ambulance arriving.  Arseny says the province now requires volunteers to be trained close to the paramedic level, which is a huge time committment.  In an effort to maintain a First Response service in the community, the town is advertising to see if any local citizens might be interested in training as first responder technicians.  Arseny says the town would cover the training costs.  He says having a first responder on the scene of an emergency in 3 to 5 minutes verses an ambulance arriving in 30 minutes could be the difference between life or death for someone.
