The Steinbach Pistons are into round two of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs. Connor Paronuzzi scored twice as the defending Turnbull Cup champions defeated the Niverville Nighthawks 3-2 and swept the best-of-seven East Division semifinal in four straight. Trey Sauder also scored for the visiting Pistons. Michael Debrito and Brendan Bottem replied for the Nighthawks.


The Winnipeg Jets losing streak has reached five games. Ivan Barbashev scored the go-ahead goal with 5:29 left in the third period as the defending Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights downed Winnipeg 4-1 at Canada Life Centre. Barbashev and Jack Eichel added empty net goals. Sean Monahan had the lone goal for the Jets who went 0-for-5 on the power play.


The Canadian women's hockey team is getting ready for next week's World Championship in Utica, New York. The players are in a pre-tournament camp in Kingston, Ontario, where they'll take on Finland in an exhibition tuneup on Saturday. Canada fell 6-3 to the United States in last year's gold-medal game in Brampton, Ontario. Defenders Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne and Ashton Bell of Deloraine along with goaltender Kristen Campbell of Brandon are on Team Canada's roster.


Jordon McDonald and Jace Freeman have clinched playoff spots at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, Alberta. McDonald has a 7-0 record and Freeman is 6-1 heading into the final day of round robin play. McDonald defeated Parker Tipple of Newfoundland & Labrador 6-4 while Freeman beat Jack MacFadyen of Prince Edward Island 9-6. Shaela Hayward has a 5-2 record. Hayward downed Emily Bowles of British Columbia 9-4 and then beat Manitoba finalist Zoey Terrick 10-3. Earlier Terrick (1-5) defeated Claire Dubinsky of Northern Ontario 11-7.
