The Carillon Sultans season came to an end Thursday night at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach.

The Elmwood Giants defeated the Sultans 5-4 and swept the Manitoba Junior Baseball League's best-of-five semifinal in three games straight.

Carillon grabbed an early 1-0 lead and then plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks in part to Troy Blad's two-run double.

The Giants started their rally in the top of five.

Elmwood got on the board without a base hit as the Giants used two walks, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to get their first run across the plate.

And just like in game one, the sixth inning was costly for the Sultans in game three.

Elmwood sent nine batters to the plate and scored three runs.

An error and two walks loaded the bases and Adam Nocita followed with a two-run double.

The comeback was completed in the seventh as Shayne Turk led off the inning with a double and scored when the Sultans botched Brett Boudreau's bunt attempt which enabled Turk to score the go-ahead run all the way from second base.

"They're a good team and when things like this happen as it happened tonight - it just shows it wasn't meant to be," said Carillon manager Alex Grenier. "It would have been a tough battle for us to win the next three. Not that I didn't have arms because there were guys coming off some rest and they would be available. The bottom line is we walked more guys than them, we hit more guys than them and we made more errors than them. The guys know all that."

Tyson Smith walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning but winning pitcher Braeden Rybak, who went the distance scattering six hits and struck out six, got the job done and nailed down the final three outs.

Grenier said his team was disappointed to see their playoff run come to an end.

"It's been a long season for them and it's been a long season for me. To know that it's over now - it's almost like a sense of relief. They're not going to dwell on it too long."

When asked if he enjoyed his first season in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League and managing this Sultans team - the answer from the Sultans skipper was obvious.

"Whenever I'm on the ball field I'm having fun," replied Grenier. "It was a good time with these guys. I've had these guys forever."
