The President of South East Sno-Riders says aside from about ten kilometres around Steinbach, their entire trail system is now open.

Two weeks ago, Dave Boutang was hoping for colder weather in order to freeze water along trails and thicken the ice on creeks and rivers. Boutang says they got their wish last week and now almost all of their 820 kilometres worth of trails are open. And he says anything that has been groomed twice is in excellent condition.

"It's just tabletop smooth," he says.

According to Boutang, the reason why the stretch near Steinbach is not yet open is because the ditches were full of water with bulrushes seven feet high. They went in and packed all of that down on Saturday and by early next week hope to bring in the groomer there.

Boutang says their groomer has been busy the last few nights. Monday night it put on 196 kilometres and Tuesday night another 78 kilometres. He says they try not running the groomer on weekends because of how busy the trails are then.

Now that they have received their cold weather, Boutang says they could use more snow. He says another five to ten centimetres of fresh snow would be excellent, especially in bush country around the Whiteshell. Boutang says there is bare ice there that could use a blanket of snow. He asks sledders to exercise caution.
