Loving the Vikings. Tue.Jan.26/10.
For those of you who join me in the morning -- it will come as no surprise that we are fans of the Minnesota Vikings in our home. My husband of course is at a completely different level than the rest of us. I mean, we were all sad when Brett Favre threw that interception near the end of the game and basically sealed their fate... but not like him. He is about as passionate about the Vikings as I've seen him about anything. So, it was not surprising to me that he put his jacket and boots on after the game and had to take a little walk. To process... to be alone with his disappointment... and just not to have to talk to anyone about it. Seem extreme to you? Perhaps... but I think it's great that sports can draw passion out of people. I think it's great to live like that -- to give that much of your emotion -- to invest that fully in something you believe in. We should all try to live like that. But what is it that pulls you in? Is it the inspirational stories of how these regular human beings have managed to do extraordinary things in their sport? Is it how hard they work? Is it all the sacrifice that just makes us want to cheer them on? Is it that we're looking for something or someone to identify with? Do we live vicariously through our sports heros? And if we do -- we live and die through them, don't we? We win AND we lose... just like them. I don't know -- to me, it's fascinating. Oh, and don't worry about my husband -- after his beloved Vikings lost he made sure that the boys and I knew that we were infinitely more important to him than a football team... he also assured us that he would be OK... and he thanked us for letting him watch every Sunday, uninterrupted... and he taught us that it's OK to put all your eggs in one basket... it may bring more disappointment but his opportunity for huge success was there -- only because he did that. Now, we do our duty and watch the Super Bowl -- and wait to see if Brett Favre will indeed come back for just one more try. It certainly adds some drama to our lives doesn't it? Just some thoughts. Have a super day! Michelle.

Laurie Mustard made it to Steinbach! Tue.Jan.27/10.
Image
There he is -- Laurie Mustard!! Our guest speaker at the Steinbach 55 Plus fundraising banquet. He made it out on the stormiest day of the year. He said it was no big deal -- a few white outs here and there... what a trooper! Laurie's a funny guy -- and he's been in the media business for a long, long time. In fact, Laurie and I go "way back" -- we co-hosted a "Manitoba Night" at the Forks for the PanAm Games, I believe. 70,000 people in attendance and we shared the stage. That was a highlight for both of us for sure!! We had so much fun -- and he is such a down-to-earth guy. He's Manitoban through and through and I love that! If you listened to The Morning Show -- you heard our chat... and pretty cool, he loves OUR classifieds on steinbachonline.com!! I thought that was neat. I couldn't stay for his entire presentation -- my "date" needed to get home to bed. But he certainly had us all laughing from the start -- talking about "the good ol' days". Thanks for coming Laurie -- it was a thrill to see you again! Michelle.

55 Plus Fundraising Banquet. Tue.Jan.26/10.
Image
There I am with my very handsome date last night at the annual 55 Plus Fundraising banquet. You see, I had 2 tickets to the banquet, and I figured if my husband and I would attend, we'd have to find babysitting again. So, the thought crossed my mind to ask my son Tyson this time around... and then, next time I would ask Paxton. You see, Tyson's my social guy... likes being at a banquet surrounded by people.  So, we went -- but it was so cute -- before we went he had to make sure he had a bath, he specially combed his hair and then asked daddy to help him pick out "a really nice shirt for taking mom out". I almost cried - but was too busy smiling to do that. He was a gentleman the whole night. It's hard to remember that, as a mom, to make some time for your children individually... perhaps a little easier for me, since I only have 2. But it was a special time -- and the banquet? Another success for 55 Plus!! I was so glad to be there and meet you all there too!! Michelle.

FREE Blizzards!! Tue.Jan.26/10.
I couldn't believe it -- but when Brad Wiebe, manager over at the Steinbach Dairy Queen stopped by the studio on the most blizzardy day of the year, and told us that Blizzards are free for the first 50 customers after 10:00... I decided then and there... me and the boys are getting Blizzards for breakfast!! So, after The Morning Show... I got in my car, braved the unbelievably strong wind and drove by our place to pick up the boys. Of course, they were home from school... so, the day was already going great for them!! Now, a free Blizzard at 10:00 in the morning?!?!? Had their mother gone "mad"?!? Anyway, we picked up 2 of their friends who were spending their free day in day care... and it was just so much fun. We went inside... they played on the play structure... ate their cookie dough, strawberry cheesequake and Oreo Blizzards and we were making memories of how awesome a "storm day" can be!! Did you know that if you eat a cookie dough blizzard -- you can suck the ice cream off the little chunks of cookie dough? And then, when you get about 10 pieces... you eat them all at once. "It's way sweeter that way". If you ask me? YUCK!! But 7 year old boys? That was quite a revelation for them!! So... THANKS DQ for allowing me to make a great memory with my kids... that means a lot!! Michelle.

The great outdoors. Mon.Jan.25/10.
Image
Before we headed in to the weekend -- I mentioned to you how part of our plans was to head out to Sandilands on Saturday for a hike and a weiner roast... well... it started to rain, snow and blow and we decided that the roads looked a little too risky to head out that way. So, we have rescheduled for next weekend... and as we were a little sad about now being able to go... my husband snuck outside. I didn't ask where he was going -- just started taking care of things inside the house. It turns out, he went out to the back yard... got some lawn chairs out of the shed, and our little mini-propane-barbecue, went to the corner store to buy weiners and hot dog buns... and when he came back in -- he said -- come outside everyone -- lunch time!! We were SOO pleasantly surprised to see a little outdoor campsite set up under 2 of our big pine trees in our backyard!! So... we had our weiner "roast" anyway!! It was snowing and raining quite a bit on Saturday too -- but we were sheltered by the trees... and then, we had a rousing snowball fight. It saved our day and we still got enjoy "the great outdoors". Don't forget that back yard of yours!! We're blessed to have them! Michelle.

What an amazing time we had watching the incredible stories of Robert Munsch come to life!! It was "The Munscha Meeya Show" and the actors were phenomenal! I have attended at least 4 of these now, every year in my pajamas, and am thoroughly entertained every time. The stories are fun and you can see the kids following every word that is said, because they already know them!! But they've never seen them quite like this. I took a few pictures of the crowd in their pajamas. I wasn't allowed to take a picture of the stage -- it was really nice with shiny tinsel and all. Thank you to the Steinbach Arts Council for bringing this great show to Steinbach for us, year after year, it is much appreciated. Oh, and I think it was the biggest crowd we've had yet!! See you there next year!
