Another lovely evening - thanks to the Eastman Youth Choir. Rick Heppner-Meuller did an amazing job with these young, committed singers. Kim Bestvater-Sidorchuk was fabulous on the piano, as always, and the audience was overjoyed to hear their children and grandchildren do so well. Mind you, it wasn't only family that was listening -- there were also those who KNOW that when a regional choir gets together -- the music is going to be great! A very touching moment of the evening was when the Ruth Oomen scholarships were being handed out. Ruth Oomen passed away this past year and was VERY instrumental in so much of the vocal and choral music that happened in the southeast - in particular - this choir. She was certainly missed at the concert - but her husband Thambi and son, Mark were there to present the scholarships which I thought was SO special. Thank you to Shannon Sawatzky and Robert Neufeld for organizing and giving SO much of your time to make this happen for our young people. No question the memories and friendships you take away from a choral experience like this - last a lifetime!! Michelle.

What an amazing time we had at Penner Pumpkins this past Saturday!! John Penner and his family certainly have worked hard to make it a place for families to have a wonderful time together. First we walked down the forest path, filled with scarecrows of all kinds, that are ANYTHING but scary. Neat little scenes that they created and put together. Then, it was off to the 22 foot high zip cord. You have to wear a harness and all -- it was awesome! We gave the pumpkin slingshot a try -- just make sure you only use the really little gourds. Pull WAAAAAAY back and let 'er rip!! Those things FLY!! Let's see, then, we went on the "train".... which is really a small tractor pulling 3 wagons behind -- it also goes through the forest and is a nice relaxing part of your time there. By then, we were getting hungry so we decided to have some hot dogs and farmer sausage burgers with chips and pop at the canteen. Next to which, stood a huge play structure and fort for the kids to play on -- of course, only after they were finished lunch. Then, we finished our time with some hot apple cider and I bought all the pumpkins I need for my fall display at home. I sure hope the weather stays nice because you need to get out there and enjoy "Penner Pumpkins". You can go to their website if you want to know more... and I will have a gallery of pictures up with my blog tomorrow morning!! Their website is easy to remember: www.pennerpumpkins.com. Another great southern Manitoba attraction starting up. Way to go! Michelle.

Me and my volleyball girls with 2-time Olympic gold medallist swimmer, Alex Bauman.
The Cal Botterill Legacy Lecture series was created 3 years ago, to gather some great sporting minds to speak and inspire the rest of us to succeed. Cal Botterill was our Sports Psychologist for our Olympic volleyball team - so, that's my connection. This year, Alex Bauman spoke as did the Head Coach of Swimming Canada, Pierre Lafontaine. What an inspirational night!

There he is!! My special guest this morning on The Morning Show - 14 year old Robert Hughes from Oak Bank. My favorite part of our chat is when he gave credit to his teacher of 9 years, Tricia Reimer and to his parents -- who he said basically set the timer and make him sit down at the piano and practice pretty much every day!! This was certainly a team effort. For a review - below is the email I got that prompted me to feature Robert this morning -- another great accomplishment by another young Manitoban! Way to go Robert! Keep it up! Michelle.
"Congratulations to Robert Hughes, Oakbank,
for achieving the Medal of Excellence for the highest piano exam mark
in Manitoba. Robert played the Conservatory Canada Level Five
Contemporary Idioms exam in June and received First Class Honours.
His
repertoire included tunes by jazz musician Christopher Norton, Canadian
Violet Archer, as well as the jazz standard “Misty” by Errol Garner and
ragtime favourite “Elite Syncopations” by Scott Joplin. He was also
tested on his improvisational skills and lead sheet reading. Several
genre including swing, Latin, rock and ragtime, were part of his
studies.
Robert’s examiner praised him for his “really impressive musicianship and artistry”.
Robert has been studying piano with Tricia Reimer, Dugald, for the past nine years.
This
aspiring musician will receive his medal at a special Conservatory
Canada ceremony in London, Ontario on November 7. He will be joined by
his very proud parents and his younger brother, David, who also studies
piano.
Robert has also played in the jazz band at Ecole Dugald
for the past two years and has now joined the jazz ensemble at Pierre
Elliot Trudeau Collegiate in Winnipeg."

Hey, just didn't want to leave for the weekend without saying that! Thanks for checking my blog and for listening to the Morning Show. I'm very thankful for my job and for those I work with. I'm also very thankful for my family. I feel very blessed. I know that family weekends are not always happy ones for everyone... I hope you may find peace in your heart and with those around you no matter what your situation. We will reconvene on the Morning Show on Tuesday... so, have a wonderful few days. Michelle.
