Our Member of Parliament stands by his government's decision to discontinue the prison farm training program. It's run at 6 prisons including the Rockwood Annex at Stony Mountain Penitentiary. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews says Corrections Canada recommended the move because the program was teaching outdated technology that was of little use in preparing inmates for their eventual release. He agrees it makes no sense to maintain an expensive training program that's of no real value to the prisoners when they get out. Toews adds the government has asked Corrections Canada to come up with some new ideas on more applicable training for inmates.
