Kicking Off Movember
fFiremen shave on Nov 1 with intent of growing a mustache to help raise awarness for Prostate Cancer
Steinbach Fire crews are taking part in an international event this month. Chief Mark Loewen says they are taking part in 'Movember'. Movember is a guy thing started about a dozen years ago in Australia by a couple of guys in a pub one night. They decided they should do something to build awareness about prostate cancer. Mo is short for moustache and the idea is you start the month clean shaven and see what kind of a moustache you can grow during the month of November.
Loewen says this is partly awareness but people can also make donations to the fire department. There will also be a fundraising Bud, Spud and Steak night in early December.
Participants celebrated in a kick off BBQ Monday where they shaved beards and moustaches in preparation for the month of Movember. Loewen adds women have pink ribbons, but prostate cancer is a bad disease that affects men as much as breast cancer affects women. He notes this is a way for guys to promote their own health awareness.
