Gibson Running For Greens In Provencher

2011 04 janine gibson

The Green Party of Canada has confirmed that Janine Gibson of the Pansy area will be its candidate for the upcoming by-election in Provencher. She has run for the party in the past few elections. Gibson wants people to consider the future of the environment and then take the time to vote.

"Mostly what I want to do is let them know that we have to protect democracy from politics. I was very pleased to meet with party leader Elizabeth May when she was in town. You know she is the kind of woman that thinks about what's going on, that builds bridges, that acts responsibly in Parliament, that encourages people  to get out there and vote. I think it's very sad that in the last federal election, over 45 per cent of the electorate did not bother to get out there and vote."

Gibson says there are important environmental issues in Provencher such as flooding that has been caused by the draining of wetlands. She notes those wetlands are vital to sustaining the aquifers that provide drinking water for the region.

She says she has traditionally received 5 to 7 per cent of the vote in Provencher which is consistent with what the party has been getting across Canada. Gibson adds,

"I'll be saying to my neighbours, this is an opportunity for you to send a message that Green values are important. We need to talk about what's important in the different areas of Provencher and ensure that people are not turned off by politics and get out there and vote so that we have a higher voter turnout and send a message that, how we treat each other, how we work together, how we work with the environment, how we work in agriculture has a long impact, not only on this generation, but future generations. Let's talk together about how we can improve the way we're doing things."
