The Silver Eye Summer Slow Pitch League Championship Tournament took place Saturday and Sunday.

Organizer Scott Toews says there were 28 teams comprised of four divisions playing a total of 56 games over the course of the two days at AD Penner Park in Steinbach as well as in Friedensfeld. Toews says the year has gone well so far with games scheduled Monday through Thursday and people coming from all over the southeast to play.

"There's probably three teams from La Broquerie, there's several that are comprised of people from Marchand, lots from Steinbach, Mitchell, Kleefeld, Ste. Anne, St. Malo, Grunthal and Vita," explains Toews. "And then, not surprisingly, you have a lot of people that were former residents of this area that now live in Winnipeg but make the trip to come out and play slow pitch back out in our area."

Toews says they were hoping for good weather and it was a great weekend for the championship tournament. Toews adds 56 games is a lot to pack into two days, but makes for a very exciting weekend.

"It's significant. Every team is guaranteed three games and almost every team is guaranteed to play on both days. It's a big time commitment but it's only one weekend and that's the theory behind it. Instead of stretching the playoffs out over another two or three weeks, well into September, we try and get everyone to buy into the fact that, hey, it's one weekend lets come out, let's have fun and make a weekend of it."
