The 2016 golf season is barely five weeks old.

With that in mind you have to wonder if the Steinbach Fly-In golf course could possibly look any greener.

The 18 hole-layout is in absolutely spectacular condition – and the calendar hasn't reached June.

“Our superintendent (Rob Fast) has been here 37 years and people in that business are pretty hard on themselves,” said Fly-In head professional Brian Guenther. “We were at a board meeting and he says, 'I'm even impressed with this place.' So that goes to show you what kind of condition we're in.”

“The golf course came through winter incredibly well and the boys have been working hard to get everything groomed. Its amazing out here. Mid-season form.”

Guenther and the Board of Directors are well aware that they need to attract that elusive golfing dollar to the club.

“We've changed a few of our programs around. If you are a season pass holder that now includes all your kids (17 and under). We've grown our junior program by a lot and we hope to even do some more yet. Membership is up a little bit. We had a sale on our memberships so that's up. With the weather comes the people and we've been relatively busy for the start of the season.”

The glory days are long gone.

There was a time when the Fly-In was jam packed every weekend and it seemed like a ton of golfers from the southeastern part of Winnipeg were either members at the club or regular green fee players.

And the membership was very, very healthy.

“I was here during those years as an assistant and it was absolutely crazy the amount of rounds we did,” said Guenther. “With competition and maybe golf flatlining a little bit, it's not as popular as it was, but everything will come back in phases. I do believe that we are going to get busier as we go on.”

Brian Guenther is entering his 12th year as the head professional at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club and has been a Canadian PGA member for 24 years.

“I've got some history at this golf course and it's a special place,” said Guenther. “It acts as a springboard where I can really show my passion for golf.”
