Patrick Laine scored his third goal of the game 2:40 into overtime as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 Wednesday night at MTS Centre.

Laine completed his hat-trick just seconds after Winnipeg netminder Michael Hutchinson stopped Auston Matthews on a breakaway.

The Maple Leafs selected Matthews first overall in the 2016 NHL Draft this past summer while Laine was chosen second by the Jets.

"[Matthews and Laine] are two great young players who are going to give their fans reasons to have nights like this over the course of the year, and over the course of their careers," said Jets head coach Paul Maurice. "Lucky for Winnipeg fans and lucky for Toronto fans, they get to watch two great young players. I’ve never seen a player score goals like Patrik Laine does in practice, ever, in my twenty years."

Tyler Myers and Mark Scheifele also scored the Jets.

Nazim Khadri had a pair of goals for the Leafs who jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Connor Carrick and William Nylander had the other Toronto goals.

The "Hot Line" of Anders Hedberg, Ulf Nilsson and Bobby Hull, which helped Winnipeg capture two Avco Cups in the WHA, were inducted by the Jets as the inaugural Hall of Fame class during a ceremony prior to the game.

Winnipeg will meet the Edmonton Oilers in the Heritage Classic Sunday at Investors Group Field.
