Junior badminton players from the southeast had a strong showing in the first major tournament of the season. On October 15th and 16th three students from Steinbach Christian School and 10 from Lac du Bonnet participated in the Yonex Winnipeg Junior Open, a tournament featuring the top players in the province. Noah Koslowsky and Micah Reimer from SCS went into the tournament as the top seeded U17 singles players while Paige Hobbs and Sasha St. Pierre were seeded first and second in U15 girls singles.

Koslowsky came out of the tournament with two victories. He defeated René Piché of the Winnipeg Winter Club (WWC) 21-14, 21-16 to capture the U17 singles title. In mixed doubles, Koslowsky and his partner Anicka Esau of Steinbach defeated the top seeded team of Micah Reimer and Kiren Diraj (WWC) in the mixed doubles finals 23-21, 12-21, 21-16. Koslowsky moved up into the U19 category in boys doubles with his partner Christopher Wiebe of Stonewall and fell short of a triple crown, losing in the quarter-finals to the U19 champions Daniel Liew and Kevin Tsang from Winnipeg.

On top of her silver medal in mixed doubles, Reimer won girls doubles with Emalia Sinclair of Stonewall defeating Krista Dornn and Isabella Janzen of Winnipeg 21-17, 21-18. She also finished second in singles losing to Sinclair in the finals 22-20, 21-14. Esau finished 3rd in doubles and 4th in singles.

In U15 Lac du Bonnet and Grand Rapids combined to win 4 of the 5 events. Paige Hobbs, Emma Boulet, Sasha St. Pierre and Riley Chapel, all of Lac du Bonnet has strong showings. Hobbs won girls doubles with Boulet and mixed doubles with Easton George of Grand Rapids. Layla Reichert finished second in both mixed doubles and girls doubles while St. Pierre finished second in girls singles and third in U17 girls doubles with Anicka Esau. Chapel made the boys doubles finals as well as semi-finals in mixed and singles.
