The Carillon Sultans and St. Boniface Legionaires will play one game to decide who moves on to round two of the Manitoba Junior Baseball League playoffs.

Garrett Virtue tossed a complete game six-hitter and struckout nine as St. Boniface defeated Carillon 2-0 Thursday night at Whittier Park in Winnipeg.

The best-of-three opening round series is now tied at one.

Cody Bartel got the start for the Sultans in game two and also went the distance as he gave up only five hits.

Carillon manager Alex Grenier wasn't thrilled with the outcome but was more than happy with they way his ball team played.

"Last night was our best played defensive game with strong pitching. We were in the game right to the end. We faced a pitcher that we knew was very strong. The last time we faced him he had a no-hitter on us into the seventh and we broke that no-hitter up last night in the first inning. We had guys on base throughout the game and we gave ourselves a chance."

The deciding third game goes tonight (7 p.m.) at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach where the Sultans edged the Legionaires 4-3 in the series opener on Wednesday.

"We're going to build off what we did last night against Garrett Virtue," said Grenier. "I know we didn't score runs on him but we gave ourselves a chance throughtout the game. We got thrown out at third twice and that's just from trying to push a little bit too hard. We had base runners throughout the game and because we were able to that - we expect to be able to that with anybody they throw at us tonight and we are going to score some runs."
