The final putt of the 2016 season should find the bottom of the cup on the18th hole shortly before the sun sets at the Steinbach Fly-In golf course on Sunday - If Mother Nature cooperates.

Fly-In club president Darren Klassen says it was a memorable summer at the 18-hole layout.

"Great year," said Klassen. "We're tracking ahead of the previous year and that's good to see. We made a decision to do our part to grow the game of golf in 2016. As a golf club, the Steinbach Fly-In made a significant investment in our junior program, and that's the most exciting thing to me. There was a significant increase in junior golfers in 2016."

"We believe golf is a lifetime sport and to have junior engagement is absolutely the lifeblood of the golf club. To engage kids young, and together with their families, we believe this is the future of the game of golf."

The Fly-In opened April 21st and within a month the course was in mid-season form.

"Rob Fast continues to do an amazing job," Klassen said. "He's an exceptional superintendent. In spite of some difficult weather in 2016, Rob delivered a golf course that was among the best in the province, without a doubt. Every year the golf course just gets better and better. The conditions continue to improve and we're really, really proud of what Rob and his crew have done in 2016. The year obviously started off fantastic. The course was green and conditions were fantastic right from day one."

But it was another wet summer at the Fly-In.

And some days - it was way too wet.

"Weather is always an issue in the golf business in Manitoba," noted Klassen. "In 2016 we did end up with a few days of exceptional rainfall amounts which did affect the following days. Draining the water off the golf course, it does take a day or two when you get those multi-inch rainfalls."

Klassen was also quick to point out the highlight of 2016 was showcasing the Fly-In to 62 golfers, their coaches and parents this past August.

"We're very proud of what our staff and volunteers did during the Manitoba Summer Games," said Klassen. "They handled the golf venue as professional as we could imagine them handling a venue. We continue to receive compliments about what our staff did during that event and the course conditions. We treated the golfers to an incredible couple of days of exceptional golf course conditions. We're proud of what we did for representing the community during the Manitoba Summer Games."
