Both Steinbach Regional Secondary School ball teams are going to the provincials.

24 hours after the Sabres blanked the Lorette Scorpions 6-0 to win the Zone 13 High School Fastpitch Championship, the SRSS captured the Zone 13 baseball championship banner.

Braedy Penner scored three runs as Steinbach Regional defeated Beausejour's Edward Schreyer School 11-1 in the “A-B” final Thursday afternoon in Mitchell.

“We played hard,” said winning pitcher Kalen Hildebrand how tossed a four-hitter in the final that was over in six innings. “Our defense was good. We hit well and got a few lucky hops here and there. We played a solid game.”

The Sabres plated four runs in the third and fourth innings and took full advantage of six Barons errors.

SRSS coach Clint Brandt says the formation of the Zone 13 High School Baseball League was beneficial to his ball team.

“It was huge. Our guys had a lot more at bats, lot more innings. Previous years we played like two or three games before zones and this year we played 13 or 14. So there's a lot more time for the guys to become a team and to work on their skills.”

Edward Schreyer downed the 2015 champion Ste. Anne Lynx 19-10 in the “B” side final Thursday morning and need a pair of victories over the “A” side champion Sabres in order to win the zone.

“They were okay but they just weren't on the bats,” said Barons coach Jen Lowry on their loss to the SRSS. “Last game they were on the bats, they were running, they were doing everything. It just wasn't their game.”

Garrett Hrabchak, Dylan Friesen and Burke Heide scored two runs each for the Sabres.

Heide feels they can to be successful at the Provincials which take place June 2nd, 3rd & 4th in Winkler.

“We're going to need some good pitching from our pitchers. Get some guys to step up and play some good defense as well.”
