20 participants wolfed down pies Friday afternoon as part of a pie eating contest in support of Southeast Helping Hands.

Wade Nerbas says Farm Credit Canada's Drive Away Hunger campaign had a food drive in the parade during the morning, then teamed up with Creative Print All for a fundraiser Barbecue and pie eating contest.

"Today's event is with Creative Print All, they put this on. We are associated with Earl's Meat Market, we are in their parking lot and it has been a wonderful day. The end goal is to raise money, support, and food for the local food bank, being Southeast Helping Hands."

Tom Doerksen with Creative Print All was the winner of the contest for the second time. He says Southeast Helping Hands is a fantastic cause that is worth supporting which is why they keep this fundraiser going.

"This is our third year putting it on, it is our fifth year in total, after year two there was a bit of a break, there was a one-year hiatus and we thought this is too good to pass up so we grabbed that bull and ran three four and five, and hope we can do a bunch more after this."

Nerbas says each participant paid a $100 entry fee into the contest noting Southeast Helping Hands will get all of that money.

"Some people say 'what are you doing stuffing your faces for this?' It is to raise awareness, to raise money. It is a fun event, we had 20 people come out here, they had smiles on their faces. Tom and I got into a pie fight, and so I got to go hose down now and get this thing done."

Nerbas says they were able to sell 260 hot dogs Friday afternoon and the Drive Away Hunger campaign will have another barbecue in September. He says in October they will be taking tractors to 25 different schools in the Southeast collecting food for eight different food banks.
