The value of building permits pulled in July in Steinbach, was similar to what was taken out last July.

Steinbach City Councillors were presented the numbers Tuesday at their regular council meeting. In July of this year, $5.7 million in permits were pulled, bringing the year to date total to $25.1 million. In July, 2014, there was $5.9 million in construction activity, with a year to date total of $30 million.

On the housing side, 5 dwelling units were added in July this year, bringing the total to 78 for the year. In July last year, there were 27 permits pulled for a year to date total of more than 100.

"When you look at the ten year rolling average, this is an average year for the city," notes Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen. "We'd love to say that it's more than an average year."

Goertzen notes the economic struggles being felt in Alberta and other parts of the country are having a ripple effect.

"Those do trickle down to all parts of Manitoba and Canada," he says. "So we continue to see people wanting to move here."

Goertzen says there appears to be more development scheduled for Steinbach this fall. He notes it is great to see new homes go up and more businesses deciding to make enhancements.
