The owner of Benner Holsteins says they started their third cut of alfalfa earlier this year than ever before.

Donald Penner and his two sons own Benner Holsteins just west of Giroux. He says the third cut is coming along nicely but excess moisture is making operations tricky.

"The water has been, it's been a bit of a challenge getting the crops off. It is a tremendous crop out there. We've had a lot of moisture, we've had a lot of heat which we farmers love for the fields, but it is a little challenging to get it off."

Penner says with such and early third cut underway, a good fourth cut looks very promising. He notes the heat and humidity that we have experienced this summer has been great for the alfalfa but not as good for the cattle.

"Milk cows do not like humidity and heat, opposite to what we like in the field, but so far it has been alright."

Penner says it will still be some time before they get to the corn fields. He says a few of their corn fields have patches that got a little to much water early on in the season, but overall they look tremendous.
