A spokesperson for Southern Health-Santé Sud says it will take a little longer than expected to complete the construction project at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach.

Work began in late March on the project that will see an entrance area added, including elevator and enclosed stairway, as well as a drop-off canopy and enclosed access connecting the main entrance and emergency room.

"The project has gone really well. It's a very complex project in a relatively small space," explains Ken Klassen, Vice President of Finance and Capital. "There have certainly been some challenges, but we wanted to do it right so there have been a few short delays."

Klassen says tying in old building systems with a new build, has created some challenges. Further to that, he says matching cosmetic items like ceilings and flooring have also taken a little longer than what they had hoped for.

Back in March, the goal was to complete the project by the end of October. Now, Klassen says with the complexity of the project and wanting to make sure it is done right, it will likely be early December before everything is wrapped up. He notes the wet summer has also caused some delays.

According to Klassen, adding six weeks to the project will not cause a significant impact to the hospital. He says what it means is that patients and visitors will need to enter the building through the CancerCare Centre for a little longer. Klassen says it looks like the new entrance will be the first part of the project completed.

Even with the delays, Klassen says the project remains on budget. This latest project is expected to cost about $3.1 million.

"I believe that the community will be very satisfied with the final outcome of this and it will be very functional and cosmetically pleasing," says Klassen. "We are very pleased with how the project is progressing."

He notes they will notify the public once this entrance is open.
