It's been two weeks since the new Director of Learning started at the Hanover School Division.

Darren Kuropatwa explains he's responsible for assisting and overseeing the learning coaches, professional growth and learning of the teachers and administrators, a project called 'New Pedagogues for Deeper Learning' based out of Ontario and determining the digital learning direction for the division. Kuropatwa notes he started teaching in Montreal in 1998, moving to Winnipeg and through various positions both taught and was responsible for English and French digital learning across the province.

Kuropatwa says he has a lot to learn but enjoys learning adding the Summer Institute for new teachers was a great opportunity to meet the new teachers coming into the division as well as work with his team of learning coaches for the first time.

"The first thing I want to do is learn as much as I can about the Hanover School Division," says Kuropatwa. "I want to meet as many people as I possibly can, I want to get into every single school within the first few months here. I will spend some time meeting as many teachers and getting into as many classrooms as I can and help schools accomplish their school goals in any way I can with the support of my learning coaches."

He says he's been delighted to discover the people who work in the division have a lot of heart and care about each and every student.

"In my travels around the province, as people discovered I was coming here they said 'where are you going to work?' and I said 'Hanover School Division' and they said 'Randy Dueck is the Superintendent there' and I said 'yes, he's a great guy,'" notes Kuropatwa. "One person said to me, 'yes, he's a very ethical leader.' and I thought, not only is that true, and it is in the short time I've had to work with him already. But it oozes in everything he does and everything he talks about. What a wonderful way to describe the Superintendent of a school division and that trickles down into all levels. So I'm delighted to be here."
