Provencher MP Ted Falk says electoral reform will be one of the issues he and his colleagues will be addressing as Parliament resumes its Sitting Monday in Ottawa. Falk says the Liberal Government has announced it is committed to a different way of voting than the current system which is called 'First Past The Post.' Under that system, the person who gets the most votes wins, even if that number is below 50% of all votes cast.

Ted Falk"They would like to, in their words, modernize that and change it to a different system. They haven't presented what that system would be like but I'm of the opinion, as are my colleagues, that whatever they come up with, they should already commit at this stage that the final decision will be made by all Canadians by way of a referendum."

He says that is the only fair way to do it because voting is a fundamental tenet of our democracy. Falk adds he is also concerned that a committee set up by the government to develop a new electoral system has six Liberals and four members from other parties. He believes the committee should be neutral.

"To be fair, this is the standard formula used based on the number of seats each party has in the House. The problem is that the Liberals are arguing that the voting system which got them elected is unfair and illegitimate. How then can they claim to be consulting all Canadians when they stack the deck in their favour right from the start?"
