One man was taken to hospital following an early morning incident near the Emerson/Pembina Port of Entry on Saturday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports that at about 2 a.m. Saturday morning, two Border Patrol Agents from the Pembina Border Patrol Station responded to alerts of a suspicious vehicle near the international boundary.

When the agents attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver rammed the government vehicle and then became physically assaultive and failed to comply with verbal commands. The agents discharged their service issued firearms. The driver was not struck by the gunfire but was taken to a local hospital in Cavalier due to self-inflicted injuries.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is probing the shooting with full cooperation from the Grand Forks Sector Border Patrol. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has also deployed a Use of Force Incident Team (UFIT) to the scene to assist in the investigation.

Neither the agents or the suspect suffered any life threatening injuries.
