Plans for a water pipeline between Grunthal and Kleefeld might get nixed.

A 10.4 kilometre long regional water pipeline had been approved for construction which would bring treated water from Grunthal to Kleefeld. The pipeline is needed to dilute Kleefeld water and

lower barium content. Luc Lahaie, Chief Administrative Officer for the Rural Municipality of Hanover says the Office of Drinking Water has determined Kleefeld's water has high barium and ammonia content. According to Lahaie, barium is known to cause elevated blood pressure.

"The barium at the moment is higher than the Canadian standard," says Lahaie. "However, we find it interesting that it's actually lower than the American standard."

Lahaie says when Manitoba Water Services Board tendered the project, costs for a pipeline came back higher than expected. He notes costs came in at more than $900,000. That is when the decision was made to try and explore other options.

According to Lahaie, Manitoba Water Services Board then decided the municipality should consider digging a test well in Kleefeld, one that would access the aquifer being used by Grunthal. Now, instead of a pipeline, Lahaie says they plan to dig a five inch test well in the coming weeks and if the water quality and quantity is sufficient, they will dig an eight inch permanent well to provide water to Kleefeld.

Lahaie says the estimate they have received is that $300,000 to $400,000 will be the cost of the test well, the permanent well and the mechanization of the wells to connect to the Kleefeld water plant. The drilling will happen on the Kleefeld water plant property, resulting in minimal disruption of other utilities in the area, including streets and ditches.

If the municipality is able to keep costs under $400,000, Lahaie says it will be a win for Hanover, a win for ratepayers and a win for their pocketbooks.
