A family in Niverville was not hurt in a house fire early Friday morning.

Niverville Fire Chief Keith Bueckert says the fire started in a garage along Elmdale. It quickly spread to the home and when crews arrived just before six o'clock it was engulfed in flames.

"When we arrived we had heavy fire showing out of the garage and it had vented through the back part of the roof already of the house structure," says Bueckert. "We called in resources from Ritchot, St. Pierre and Tache to aid with water and manpower."

Bueckert says by 7:30am they had the fire under control.

According to Bueckert, the homeowner awoke to the smell of smoke in the house and was able to safely remove her three young children. There were no injuries.

The garage and roof of the house have heavy damage and Bueckert says it appears to be a total loss. He notes there wasn't a fire wall separating the attic space and the garage and so once the fire started in the garage, crews had quite a fight on their hands to try and contain it.

A damage estimate has not been given and the cause of the fire has not been reported.

There are homes on either side and Bueckert says it appears for the mostpart crews were able to prevent damage to surrounding structures.
