Councillors and staff in the Village of St. Pierre are wearing orange Friday. Mayor Mona Fallis explains it's part of a national effort to support the 'Every Child Matters' campaign.

"The 'Every Child Matters' campaign is about support for children who were forced into residential schools. We as a council, we recognize that this is a very tough journey for them and we're just there to take a stand and walk with them through this journey and say that we, as a council and Village of St. Pierre, we recognize that they have struggles and we're there for them."

Fallis says council heard about the campaign while attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention in Winnipeg and felt strongly about support it. She is not aware of any local residents who were impacted by residential schools but says it's important that all Canadians show support for those across the country who were affected.

"We want to keep this issue at the forefront. For many, there's a long journey ahead of them and that journey has been going for a long time. We recognize that they need support. This is really all that we can do, but we can keep this matter in the forefront and show that we recognize the wrongs that were done in the past."

Orange Shirt Day was started in 2013 in British Columbia and grew out of the story of a girl who had her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. It has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.
