Children ages four to seven are learning how to cook in an eight-week long course called KinderChefs.

Town of Ste. Anne Recreation Director Carolyn Cameron says the first class on Saturday saw ten students who were eager to create something good in the kitchen. Cameron notes they made sure to cover safety in the kitchen and what to do in case of an emergency before getting started. She adds there are recipes that require some adult preparation before class such as cutting or peeling.

KinderChefs having fun Saturday afternoon."We're encouraging them by having fun in the kitchen so that they enjoy cooking and enjoy participating with their parents when they go home," she notes. "Cooking can also create healthy living for young kids to learn that there's a healthy way to cook."

Cameron says people bond over food and spending time in the kitchen with family creating a meal helps build closer relationships. She adds her two children who are 12 and 10 years old help out in the kitchen at home.

"We cook healthy at my house, so they learn about what's good to fuel your body. I'm a big proponent of healthy living. I also feel like part of the encouragement is, if kids make their own food, they become a little less fussy about what they're eating. If they creating something, they're more inclined to eat it. So you can convince them that eating something healthier is actually a good idea."

Cameron says there was also a JuniorChefs baking class, but was seeing a lot of interest. She adds there is a competitive cooking class called IronChefs being offered in late spring. Meanwhile, Cameron notes there is an adult baking class currently being offered as well.
