A new program is coming to Steinbach this fall to teach people with disabilities how to swim. Cam Krisko of Winnipeg is a volunteer with 'Making Waves'. He says it's a charitable organization that provides affordable and accessible one-on-one swimming instruction, water safety instruction and summer camp opportunities for children with disabilities. Krisko adds they are looking for about 100 volunteers in Steinbach.

"We provide all the training. As long as the volunteers are comfortable themselves in the water, they don't have to have had a teaching background or to have their lifeguard qualifications. We'll come out, we'll run a couple of hour training session and get everyone up to where they need to be. As for the program itself, we run lessons for an hour-and-a-half. In that hour-and-a-half, that volunteer would teach three different children for half an hour each."

The program will be run in Steinbach on either Saturday or Sunday afternoons. He says they are also looking for a local coordinator.

"What we need is somebody to help us with the day-to-day coordination of the program. We have a great team here in Winnipeg that would be supporting them every step of the way."

Krisko notes all positions in the organization, including his, are filled by volunteers.
